The Marine Geology Group of the Institute of Marine Science, CSIC, situated in Barcelona is
the leading group in the field of the marine geosciencies in Spain. The Marine
Geology group of the CSIC has developed work of great transcendency in both basic science and
marine technology, obtaining its best results in projects of international scientific
cooperation. Furthermore, members of the Group of Marine Geology of the CSIC are part of
several scientific committees within the National Plan of R&D, as well as in
international scientific committees.
The main research topics and objectives in focus in the CSICs Marine Geology Group of
Barcelona are the following:
- Continental margin and ocean basin modelling
- Global climate change
- Environment and geologic hazards
- Shelf-ocean transfer
- Coastal dynamics
CSICīs Marine Geology Group of Barcelona focuses in leading basic research as well as
applied technology. In the technical-scientific aspects, the Group has devoted much effort
in the acquisition and setting of the oceanographic research vessels equipment dedicated to
geological investigations (Cornide de Saavedra, García del Cid and BIO
Hespérides).
Additionaly, new techniques have been improved in seismic recording, sampling and
analysis that allow the development of relevant aspects in the field of marine sciences.
An important framework has also been evolved for geophysical and sedimentological automatic
analysis and a database has been created providing post-operation data analysis and data
exchange with other scientific institutions.
