1. History

Established in 1849 as the Commission for the Geological Map of Spain. It has now expanded as the national research and information center on earth sciences and related technologies. Until 1996 adscribed to the Ministery of Industry . Today it is adscribed to the Ministery of Environment.

From 1927 to 1988 it was known as Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME), and since 1988 as Instituto Tecnológico Geominero de España (ITGE).

2. Structure

Government Institution, with the character of Public Research Organism (O.P.I.), it’s also a commercial institution and with a structure of autonomous organization.

The ITGE is structured following branches :

  • Geology and Basic Techniques
  • Underground Water
  • Mineral Ressources and Environmental Studies
  • Planning and Management Department
  • Administrative Department under the General Director.

There are also 15 regional offices, in Sevilla, Granada, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Salamanca, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santiago de Compostela, Murcia, Zaragoza, Oviedo, etc.

3. Thematic Cartography
